			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s been almost a year since I&#8217;ve updated my blog.  Mostly due to being so busy!  I have managed to keep the weight off despite the fact that my knee is still not 100%.  Still waiting for the MRI on it&#8230;  I had taken Sept to Feb off from boxing/boxercise and was just going to the gym instead.  However, I&#8217;ve realized that boxing&#8217;s in my blood and I missed it too much.  I returned to boxing/boxercise in February, but only as a rec member.  I stepped down as coach and feel good about my decision.  Now, I go to both and am currently learning a lot more technique and getting awesome workouts at the same time!  Mid-September, dance classes start up again.  I&#8217;m going back to hip hop and have signed up for Tap/Jazz as well.  Should keep me busy throughout the school year!<br />
The summer&#8217;s flying by too fast!  I&#8217;ve made a conscious choice to resume writing in my food journal (I had quit in the Spring) since I was feeling the weight creeping up again on me slowly (not being accountable made me eat worse).  I&#8217;ve definitely kicked it up a notch this week: I went for two 20 minute runs (up and down hills), a 2 hour walk, 2 boxercise sessions and a boxing session.  I&#8217;ve been writing everything I put into my body and eating well again.  I&#8217;ve increased my water consumption as well.  It&#8217;s amazing that doing these few simple things has made me feel strong again!  I&#8217;m going to continue regularly updating this blog, since it makes me accountable to you, the reader.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Starting this September, I&#8217;ll not only be going back to work after a well-deserved summer break, but I&#8217;m going to amp up my workouts.  I&#8217;m going to continue with boxing and I will also be teaching boxercise once a week.  On top of that, I joined dance again after a lengthy absence due to splitting my knee open NYE 2009.  I decided to take a lyrical class instead of advance hip hop.  In addition to this class, I will be taking a technique class which involves a lot of stretching.  This class should help increase my flexibility.  I will also be involved in teaching dance at school too.  Hopefully this busy workout schedule will help me lose a few more pounds!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week, I was plagued by a sore hip flexor (that could be caused by overcompensating because my sore knee), which lead me to adjust my workouts &#8211; I only worked out once.  I wasn&#8217;t too happy about it, but Monday was a holiday and we&#8217;d been away at the cottage.  That in itself was enough to help me gain about 5 lbs!  I luckily had a massage appointment scheduled for this week.  She worked so hard at it, I was bruised!  I couldn&#8217;t believe how fast it healed &#8211; I was able to go to boxing this week.  I was cautious not to aggravate it again.  This week was catch up week for workouts.  I boxed twice and today I ran for about 45 minutes and did 30 minutes on the stepper <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> .  I was very proud of myself!  I&#8217;ve been eating clean all week too (compared to the bad eating done at the cottage!).  No cheat day for me today even though it&#8217;s Friday&#8230; maybe tomorrow!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last Saturday, I had a mini-meltdown over my weight.  Being off for the summer and in a relationship was starting to take its toll on my body.  My workouts had gone from 4 to 2 per week and well going out to eat with my boyfriend certainly hasn&#8217;t helped.  So on Saturday, after a few cocktails, I felt completely fat (didn&#8217;t help that I was bloated and PMS-ing &#8211; you know what I mean girls!).  My boyfriend reassured me that I looked great, but it didn&#8217;t matter.  I knew that I had gained 5 lbs and was up to 123.5 lbs (I had weighed myself that day at my aunt&#8217;s house).  I know it doesn&#8217;t sound like much, but I had gained most of it in my midsection, which is very uncomfortable for me.  I am so lucky to have my hunny&#8217;s support because he then told me that whatever I needed to do to lose it, he would support me.  If I needed to eat healthier, he would get some nutritious food when he cooks for me.  Just that was enough to get me going again!  So on Monday, I went grocery shopping.  I bought some halibut, some fruit and veggies, and other healthy food.  I devised a plan: I would go to the gym in the morning and then to boxing on Monday and Wednesday.  Tuesday and Thursday, I would run/go to the gym to get some cardio in.  And that&#8217;s exactly what I did.  For meals, I pre-chopped and pre-cooked what I could to help me make quick and healthy meals.  I also used my BBQ every day this week.  Veggies drizzled with a tablespoon of olive oil and sprinkled with spices only took 10 min to cook on the BBQ.  I also cooked skinless/boneless chicken and halibut on the it.  I grilled the fish with some lemon slices and some spices.  It just fell apart in my plate &#8211; so yummy too!  For snacks, I&#8217;ve been eating fruit, especially before going to bed.  I read in Women&#8217;s Health that that&#8217;s the optimal thing to eat before bedtime.  I also eliminated alcohol, which wasn&#8217;t that hard.</p>
<p>All of my hard work this week paid off!  I lost an inch off of my waist!  Back to a 26&#8221;.  My smallest was 25.5&#8221;, but I&#8217;m happy with my results this week.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to meet my boyfriend&#8217;s family this weekend at their family reunion.  I know I&#8217;m going to be tempted to eat junk, but I&#8217;m going to make a conscious effort to not eat any unhealthy foods.  I love the way I feel right now and don&#8217;t want to mess it up!</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve managed to maintain the weight loss over the past few months.  Well, somewhat.  I&#8217;ve gained a few pounds (I&#8217;m up to 121 lbs from 118 lbs), but they will disappear soon enough.  I fell off the horse after school let out last week, but I&#8217;ve gotten back on this week.  I&#8217;ve been eating healthier (remember, that&#8217;s the biggest part of losing and maintaining weight!) and gotten back to boxing.  I took 2 weeks off boxing and had been going to the gym instead because of work.  There was no way I was going to hang around an empty school until 6 pm to go to boxing.  So, I was running on the threadmill and outside on Base, but not doing as much strength training.  It&#8217;s good to switch it up every now and again!</p>
<p>So, that means only one cheat day per week.  Yes, I was starting to do 2 and 3 times for a couple of weeks &#8211; NOT GOOD!  The important thing is to recognize that you&#8217;ve gone off track and to just get back on without being too hard on yourself.  We all make mistakes and no one&#8217;s perfect!  I tried to avoid the negative self-talk, &#8220;You&#8217;re so fat!&#8221;, and seeing the numbers on the scale and the extra inch I put on my waist was motivation enough to step up my workouts and cut out the junk.</p>
<p>The important thing to remember is to not be too hard on yourself if you&#8217;ve stepped away from good eating habits and intense workouts.  You&#8217;re only human and we&#8217;re not perfect!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the past year, I&#8217;ve been asked many questions about how I lost the weight and have kept it off by women who want to do the same.  I&#8217;ve noticed that I can talk until the cows come home, but if they are not really serious about losing the weight and making the effort, it&#8217;s not worth wasting my breath on giving advice.  Here&#8217;s the deal: if you really want to lose the weight, you need to make the full commitment, not just trying halfway.  That means that in the first month or so, you really need to cut ALL cheating!  No cookies, no chocolates, no chips, no nothing!  Not even one.  If you convince yourself that one chip won&#8217;t hurt during this initial period, you&#8217;re WRONG!  What you need to break in that first period of time is your unhealthy eating habits.  Everyone is different, so their vices vary.  If you really want to lose the weight, you need to figure out what&#8217;s stopping you.  For me, it was salt and portion size.  So, during that first bit, I had to stop eating my beloved Shake and Bake anything (chicken, pork chops, you name it, I Shaked and Baked it!), chips, Lipton Soup, etc.  It wasn&#8217;t easy, but looking at myself in the mirror at 143 lbs when you&#8217;re only standing at 5&#8217;0 1/2 is not easy either.  I remember feeling disgusted by the image looking back at me.  I was fed up with not being able to wear what I wanted.  I was sick and tired of constantly adjusting my pants so it covered my belly when I was sitting.  If you feel the same way, then it&#8217;s time for a change!  Only YOU can decide when you&#8217;ve hit rock bottom.  Until you do, you&#8217;re going to fool yourself into thinking it&#8217;s what you want.  You&#8217;re going to cheat, make excuses and skip out on workouts because you truly are not ready to lose the weight.  Unless there is a medical reason to explain why you&#8217;re not losing weight, I believe everyone can do it.  You can be healthier.  You can look great and wear clothes that fit nicely.  It can happen.  For over 25 years, I struggled with my weight.  I made the conscious choice to change that.  No more up and down yo-yo weight loss.  It is very dangerous to go up and down 5 lbs and more a few times a year.  You have to do this for yourself.  It&#8217;s a matter of health, not fashion.  If your BMI (Body Mass Index &#8211; google it to see what yours is) is between 25 and 35 and you have a waistline of 35&#8221; and above, you&#8217;re in serious risk of heart disease.  My BMI starting out put me as being overweight.  Now, I&#8217;m in a healthy range.  I don&#8217;t worry about high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease as much because I know I&#8217;m eating healthy (ratio of 20:80) and exercising regularly.</p>
<p>Exercise is also a very important part of being healthy.  You have to step up your workouts though.  If you go for a 30 min walk 3 times a week, that&#8217;s not going to get you to where you want to be!  No, I&#8217;m not talking about people who are obese, but those of you who are wanting to lose 20-40 lbs.  You&#8217;re going to have to be consistent as well.  Yes, I&#8217;ve been boxing for almost 3 years now, but I managed to gain some weight 2 years ago even though I was boxing.  I have to admit, I was boxing once a week and attending a beginner hip hop dance class (which wasn&#8217;t a very intense workout compared to boxing) and eating whatever.  That was not what helped me lose weight.  I gained about 10 lbs!  What I needed to do was increase my boxing workouts from 1 to 2 or 3 per week.  I still attended dance class and then started teaching boxercise twice a week.  I also went to the gym and worked on my cardio.  I discovered running and absolutely loved it!  You have to increase your workouts and really push yourself!  No one will do that for you.  If you REALLY want it, you can do it.  You have to be stubborn about it.  If you find yourself cheating, making excuses and skipping workouts, then you have not hit rock bottom and you are comfortable with being overweight.  Only YOU can do it.  No amount of advice will help.  It&#8217;ll be &#8220;yes, yes, I can do that&#8221;, but really the info is going in one ear and out the other.</p>
<p>Your body is temple.  Treat it as such!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve been boxing on a regular basis again and back to teaching boxercise once a week with no problems.  It&#8217;s been a slow process, but I&#8217;m starting to feel more and more like myself again!  In fact, I ended up running for 10 minutes non-stop on Tuesday and 20 minutes of non-stop running today.  It&#8217;s a great feeling to accomplish just this small feat.  Before long, I&#8217;ll be running for an hour no problem with S. again. </p>
<p>For the past couple of weeks, I&#8217;ve been sorting through my summer clothes and have gotten rid of most of the clothes that are now too big.  Lucky for me, S. came by and brought me clothes that she didn&#8217;t want anymore.  Everything she brought me fits!  A variety of size 2 or 4 clothing.  I never thought I&#8217;d see the day that I would be wearing clothing of that size.  I thought it was not possible to go below my usual size 10/12 and fitting into a size 7 back when I was 25 years old was the biggest accomplishment ever.  I guess I was wrong.  Pleasantly wrong though! </p>
<p>Something that I was pondering this weekend is how my weight loss has not only helped me to get into smaller clothes, but also a dramatic internal change has occurred as well.  Since I started boxing, I feel so much stronger, not only physically, but mentally too.  It makes me feel independent &#8211; that I don&#8217;t need anyone to help me.  In turn, my self-esteem has increased and it&#8217;s made me become more assertive in life and work.  Imagine&#8230; all this because I wanted to lose 10 pounds.  Who knew losing 25 lbs in the end would make me a better person, inside and out.</p>
<p>Transformation of the body can lead to a complete metamorphosis.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well folks, I thought I had made it through winter without getting sick.  I was wrong.  It hit me Thursday night.  The flu.  Ick!</p>
<p>I decided to take Thursday off from working out.  My plan was to go to the gym on Friday instead.  Unfortunately, that wasn&#8217;t in the cards for me.  Thursday night was met without much sleep.  The only thing I was able to keep down Friday was some crackers, Gatorade, some 7-up and later on, some chicken noodle soup.  I felt much better by Saturday and since I missed my &#8220;cheat&#8221; day, I figured I&#8217;d be safe to have it that day.  Big mistake.  Huge!  It hit me again on Saturday night.  Sunday was spent resting.  Thank God I felt somewhat better today and was able to make it to work.  I did take today off from boxing though.  I haven&#8217;t been eating very much, so I wouldn&#8217;t have the energy to go anyway.  Tomorrow will be good for me to get back to it since I&#8217;ll be coaching.  I&#8217;m hoping that this is the end of it &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t wish this on my worst enemy.  Well&#8230; maybe&#8230; Kidding!</p>
<p>A word to the wise: if you&#8217;re under the weather, take it easy and rest because you may not be completely over it.  Don&#8217;t push it too hard!</p>

<p>I guess I was lucky that my knees weren&#8217;t broken!  They hit the dash and that&#8217;s what cut my right one.  Things are progressing nicely though.</p>

<p>This is what my knee looked like once the stitches were taken out.  The bandages that were on irritated my skin &#8211; it was all dry and flaky for a week or so.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Things have been a lot better workout-wise, but I&#8217;m still not at a 100%.  Luckily, I haven&#8217;t gained much weight.  I may have gained a couple of pounds, but lost them as soon as I could jump up and down again.  Last week was the first week that I could do the warm up for both boxing and boxercise (minus burpees - oh, man!  ha.) and not be in pain afterwards.  Last Wednesday, I joined the gym again, since I won&#8217;t be able to return to hip hop class.  So, on Thursday, I went for the first time in a while.  I worked out for a bit on the cardio machines (stairclimber and eliptical &#8211; less pressure on my knees), then did some leg strengthening exercises.  I thought I would just try for fun to run on the track.  Just for fun.  Well, I have to say that I was able to run for about 5 minutes (I didn&#8217;t time it) before I felt it was time to stop.  I could feel my knees aching.  I did feel it a couple of days later though (my physiotherapist told me it takes about 24-48 hours to feel the pain from the impact).  For someone who used to run for about an hour to an hour and a half, right now I&#8217;ll take the 5 minutes.  I didn&#8217;t think I&#8217;d be able to run so soon!  It&#8217;s good news, but it still doesn&#8217;t mean that I&#8217;m out of the woods yet.  It&#8217;s progress, but at a slow pace&#8230;</p>
